SOME TIPS FOR PARAPHRASING A TEXT - PART 4

Today's article closes the series on techniques for paraphrasing.

As always, I would like to remind you that the last two rules I will add to this article also originated from a collaboration with one of my clients, Magdalena Schmidt. We initially extracted them from sentences taken from newspaper articles and, subsequently, Magdalena kindly took it upon herself to compile them into a document from which I, with her permission, am now drawing for the last time.

RULE 7:

Transform a sentence with a specific subject into an impersonal construction through the use of "si" (one).

EXAMPLE:

Il medico deve farsi trovare. È la legge. / The doctor must be found. It is the law. (original sentence)

Si deve poter trovare il medico. È la legge. / One must be able to find the doctor. It is the law. (rephrased sentence)

RULE 6:

Merge two short sentences using different stylistic resources.

EXAMPLE:

We can, for example, use a conjunction.

Il medico deve farsi trovare. È la legge. / The doctor must be found. It is the law. (original sentence)

Il medico deve farsi trovare dato che è la legge. / The doctor has to be found as it is the law. (rephrased sentence)

EXAMPLE:

Or we can use a relative "che" (who/which/that).

Il medico deve farsi trovare. È la legge. / The doctor must be found. It is the law. (original sentence)

Il medico che si fa trovare rispetta la legge. / The doctor who turns up respects the law. (rephrased sentence)

EXAMPLE:

Or finally a hypothetical sentence.

Il medico deve farsi trovare. È la legge. / The doctor must be found. It is the law. (original sentence)

Se la legge lo richiede, il medico deve farsi trovare. / If the law requires it, the doctor must be found. (rephrased sentence)
